Site Visit: HDB Centre of Building Research with EDF Lab Singapore
30 Jan 2018 – The Housing Development Board (HDB) is Singapore’s public housing authority and a statutory board under the Ministry of National Development. HDB takes pride in creating homes and towns that form a quality living environment for the young and old. The Centre of Building Research (CBR) is HDB’s Master Laboratory.
Set up in 2009, it spearheads its R&D efforts in building and environmental sustainability, while nurturing new technologies for future generations of public housing.
The CBR focuses its R&D initiatives on 5 areas, which are aligned with our ‘Roadmap to Better Living’ for building ‘Sustainable Towns’:
- Energy: reduce overall energy consumption in towns and drive the adoption of renewable and clean energy sources
- Urban Greenery: create a conducive living environment for residents through innovative greening solutions
- Living Environment: create a high-quality sustainable urban living for all
- Waste & Water: research into more efficient waste and water management solutions
- Building Technology: achieve high quality housing and increase productivity in design and construction
EDF, a world’s leading electricity company, is aiming at speeding up innovation for the cities of tomorrow with innovations in energy efficiency in buildings, new low carbon uses of energy, smart grids, renewable energy, electric mobility and batteries.
In Singapore, the R&D branch of EDF Group has launched EDF Lab Singapore in 2014 to develop and explore solutions to help decision makers and developers achieve their vision of smart and sustainable cities. Working with the Singaporean government (HDB) and local universities (NUS, SUTD, SIT, ESSEC), EDF Lab Singapore is rooting a strong expertise adapted to the Singaporean and South East Asian context.
EDF Lab Singapore, with the support of the R&D in Europe, has developed a 3D simulation platform to help HDB assess the refurbishment and new development of HDB towns. This platform is now evolving with new functionalities as part of the recently launched New Urban Kampung project where HDB, together with SUTD and EDF will go a step further integrating Quality of Life assessment in the planning of HDB towns.
